The National Park Service was established in 1916 with the primary mission of managing and preserving national parks and monuments. This was a response to the growing recognition of the need to protect the natural beauty and historical significance of these areas for public enjoyment and conservation. The early 20th century saw an increase in tourism and a rising awareness of environmental issues, prompting the federal government to formalize its commitment to preserving America's natural landscapes.

The formation of the National Park Service marked a significant step in the preservation movement, as it centralized the stewardship of national parks under a dedicated agency. The intent was not only to safeguard these areas from exploitation and degradation but also to enhance public access and enjoyment, as well as to educate the public about the importance of conservation. This focus on preservation and responsible management has allowed national parks to remain untouched and accessible for future generations, serving as vital natural habitats and recreational spaces.
